What to Do When Your iPhone Feels Hot

If you notice your iPhone feeling hot, it could be due to heavy processing, which often drains the battery quickly.

To check how much battery is being used, go to the Settings app and select Battery. You’ll see a breakdown of battery usage over the past 24 hours and the past 10 days, with graphs showing daily battery levels and each app’s usage.

Reviewing the list of apps here lets you identify those consuming the most power. If an app ranks high in the past 24 hours but not within the past 10 days, it could be the main reason for your recent iPhone overheating.

If you don’t remember using that app, it might be consuming a lot of battery in the background. In this case, you may want to turn off background processing for the app or even consider deleting it.

To turn off background processing, open the Settings app, scroll down to the list of apps, select the app, and toggle off “Background App Refresh.”

If high battery usage makes sense based on your activity (e.g., using a graphics-intensive game), then there’s no issue. But if a seemingly simple app appears high on the list, it’s worth checking if the app was recently updated, as it might have a bug from the latest update.

If the app also shows up in the past 10 days, it might have an ongoing bug or inefficient processing. If this isn’t an essential app for you, it might be better to consider other options.

Keeping your phone operational for longer is vital in daily life, especially during emergencies when charging options might be limited. At such times, consider if you truly need certain battery-draining apps.

Heavy battery usage also impacts your iPhone’s lifespan. In Settings, under “Battery Health & Charging,” you can see your battery’s maximum capacity compared to its original state.

After two years, battery capacity generally drops to around 80%. You can have your battery replaced at Apple for a fee. For the latest iPhone 14 series, it’s around 14,900 yen, and for the iPhone 12 Pro, it’s about 12,800 yen. If you’re enrolled in AppleCare+ and the capacity falls below 80%, replacement is free.

A reduced maximum battery capacity can signal it’s time to replace your phone. However, with iPhone prices rising, it’s worth maintaining your device as long as possible. Taking care of your battery is one way to make your iPhone last longer.
