In the Tokyo metropolitan area, rapid trains often have Green Cars attached, which are non-reserved seating cars. You can board these cars with a regular Green Car ticket, and if you’re using Suica, simply tapping the sensor above the seat allows you to skip onboard inspection.
You can register Suica in the Wallet app on iPhone or Apple Watch. For those who don’t need a commuter pass, there’s no need to install the Suica app, as you can add funds directly from your Apple Watch.
But can you purchase a Green Car ticket at the station ticket machines if you’re using an iPhone or Apple Watch?
I tested it, and a message appeared saying, “Not available for use.” In other words, you cannot purchase a Green Car ticket at station ticket machines using Suica on an iPhone or Apple Watch. To buy a Green Car ticket, you’ll need to use the Suica app.
For those who prefer not to install unnecessary apps, this may not be ideal. Without the app, the only option is to buy a paper Green Car ticket with cash or credit card and go through the onboard inspection process.
