Noticing the Little Pieces of Good Luck Around You

Are you a lucky person or an unlucky one?
I believe it depends on how much you’re aware of the fortunate things happening around you.

Lucky moments occur more often than we realize. By simply choosing to pay attention to them, we can start seeing a new perspective of the world around us.

Noticing the small bits of good fortune we used to overlook can bring a sense of calm—and that enriches our hearts.

Try Keeping a “Good Luck Journal”

To become more aware of your luck, why not try keeping a good luck journal?
At the end of each day, jot down the lucky things that happened. You’ll begin to notice that more fortunate events occur than you might have expected.

Even small bits of good luck can ease your heart once you become aware of them. You might start to feel that good things really do happen to you—that maybe, you’re luckier than you thought.

One day, I wrote in my journal that I received a survey receipt at Starbucks—a small but rare occurrence.
Another day, I ordered a tall Dark Mocha Chip Frappuccino, but the barista said, “Oops, I accidentally made a venti. If you don’t mind…” and gave me the upsized drink at no extra cost. Unexpected luck like that made its way into my journal too.

Once you start writing things down, you realize lucky moments happen more than you imagined. And then, you’ll want to write the next one down too. This practice of consciously noticing good fortune can lift your spirits—even during difficult times.

Turning Misfortune into Good Fortune

Sometimes, simply shifting your mindset can turn a misfortune into a stroke of luck.

For example, I previously shared in my blog post “I Got Caught in a Phishing Scam and Want to Share What I Learned (Japanese Article)” that I once entered my credit card information on a phishing site.
It was clearly an unfortunate event. But I contacted the card company right away and avoided any damage, which—if you think about it—could be considered a silver lining.

Moreover, the incident became content for a blog post. In that sense, the experience turned into something meaningful.

Even more, having gone through such an experience made me more cautious moving forward. That too, could be seen as a form of good fortune.

Of course, not every misfortune can be reframed like this. But depending on the situation, changing how you look at it can help you see it as a fortunate event.

In Closing

If we’re going to live this life either way, it’s far better to believe you’re lucky than to go around thinking you’re not.
It’s better to think that good fortune follows you than to assume misfortune defines you.

When you believe you’re unlucky, you tend to notice all the unfortunate things. But when you believe you’re lucky, you start spotting good things all around you.
That’s why I think maintaining awareness that you are lucky allows you to live as a lucky person.

May good fortune come your way, dear reader.
